An Inside Look at the Most Dangerous Occupations in the United States

Use your mind’s eye to envision a dangerous situation.  Are you picturing walking down a dark alley at night or being stuck in a snowstorm on a busy highway?  If so, you are not alone.  Most people consider such situational outliers as the most dangerous possible situations yet the truth is thousands of our fellow Americans face considerable danger on a daily basis by merely showing up for work.

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, an incredible 5,000+ deaths occurred in the workplace in 2018 alone.  This statistic equates to nearly four deaths for every 100,000 employees.  It is particularly interesting to note the mortality rate for certain jobs is almost a 30 multiple of the rate noted above.  Without further adieu, here is a look at the most dangerous lines of work in the United States as gauged by the number of fatalities for every 100,000 employees in their respective industries:

  1. Logging laborers
  2. Fishermen and other workers in the fishing industry
  3. Aircraft pilots
  4. Roofing industry workers
  5. Collectors of recyclable and reuse materials
  6. Truck drivers and driver/sales workers
  7. Ranchers, farmers and those laboring in the agriculture industry
  8. Steel and structural iron workers
  9. First-line supervisors of construction/extraction laborers
  10. First-line supervisors of those working in the groundskeeping, lawn and landscaping industries

In totality, workplace accidents slightly spiked from ’17 to ’18.  However, the number of work-related deaths remained steady in this period of time.  In excess of 2,000 workplace deaths, equating to 40% of all job-related fatalities resulted from accidents involving transportation.

Physical contact with work equipment and other objects was the second-most common cause of work-related death, spurring a total of 786 fatalities.  This statistic accounts for deaths resulting from operating equipment/machinery and being struck by falling objects.  Falls, trips and slips were another particularly frequent workplace accident.
